It has often been said that you are what you eat.  In our practice we believe that the opposite is also true, if you are NOT eating properly then you will NOT have health, in other words you will have disease.

It is a fact that your health can be dramatically improved or degraded by diet and nutrition.  There are many examples of disease states that are created due to the absence of a specific nutritional product, from vitamin B12 deficiency to Iron deficiency.  We also know that Calcium plays a role in the prevention of Osteoporosis.  Did you know that Calcium is also vital for many other functions?

Here is a partial list of benefits from Calcium:

  • Prevents muscle cramps

  • Builds bones and teeth

  • Maintains bone density and strength

  • Buffers acid in the stomach and acts as an antacid

  • Helps regulate heartbeat, blood clotting, and muscle contraction

  • Promotes storage and release of some hormones

This is only one mineral.  Can you imagine the complexity of the body if for one mineral there are this many uses?  The chemical factory that is our body requires the right type of food in the right quantities.

In today's market we see the low-carbohydrate diet, the low-fat diet, the South Beach, the Adkins, etc. etc. etc.  The chances are slim that your individual needs would be addressed by a "standardized diet."  That is why it is important to know the foods that will best serve your needs and if necessary the supplementation that will fill in the gaps in your diet.

Dr. Joseph Mercola writes in his book, "Total Health," that there are three big ideas when it comes to nutrition:

1. "Your health, whether you have disease, weight issues, or decent health already, will improve drastically if you eliminate, or vastly reduce, the amount of grains and sugars you consume."

2. "Your emotional health is directly related to your physical health..."

3. "You, like all people, have a unique biochemistry.  And there are specific foods, at specific levels, that are most ideal for your type.  Conversely, some foods that are generally considered "healthy" may not be as healthy for you as you think."
